Q: Why is the theme of your first exhibition action painting and film soundtracks?

Q: 初個展のテーマをアクションペインティングと映画のサントラにした理由を教えてください。

A: This show is a collaborative of two of creative activities: painting and movies. After many years of working in the film business, I finally got to host my own radio show about film soundtracks. The radio show Working Title, the film soundtrack radio show broadcasts monthly on FM Karuizawa.

A: このショーは絵画と映画の２つの創造的分野のコラボからできています。映画業界で長年働いた経験がきっかけとなり、映画のサントラについてのラジオ番組を持つことができました。ラジオ番組「ワーキング・タイトル」は映画のサントラに関する内容で毎月FM軽井沢で放送されています。

Q: Why is this show called Back to Color? Why is this place the location of your first show?

Q: この個展がバックトゥーカラーと呼ばれる理由はなんですか？また、展示場所をここに決めた理由はありますか？

A: As Wim Wenders the film director taught me, “Let your locations scout your stories.” The site of my first exhibition, this old train station, was a location in Japan’s first color film, Carmen Comes home (1951).

A: 映画監督ヴィム・ヴェンダースは私に「ロケ場所でストーリーをスカウトする」ということを教えてくれました。そこで私は最初の個展会場として日本初のカラー映画、「カルメン故郷に帰る」（1951年昭和26年公開）のロケ地となったこの駅を選びました。

Christian Storms is a modern day Renaissance man. He’s been an actor, TV movie show host, director, film/tv producer, sports TV director, dialogue coach, sound recordist, teacher and film subtitler. He’s lived in Japan for 29 years and in Tsumagoi Village in Gunma for the past four years. He is often away from home working on location. He’s worked for FIFA on four World Cups. Some of his work is on display at Hirose, a local Japanese restaurant in Kitakaruizawa, where he often helps out as a dishwasher during Golden Week and Obon.

クリスチャン・ストームズは現代のルネッサンスマンとの異名を持つほどの多才な万能型の教養人で、これまで俳優、司会、監督、プロデューサー、スポーツ番組監督、セリフ指導者、サウンド技師、映画字幕翻訳者として幅広く活躍。日本在住29年になり、4年前より群馬県嬬恋村へ移住。ロケでの仕事で世界各地をまわることも多く、FIFAワールドカップも4回経験。クリスチャンの作品は北軽井沢にあるレストラン広瀬でも展示されていて、ゴールデンウィークやお盆期間は皿洗いのバイトもしている。

Christian’s mantra is random chaos. Striking out in all directions much like his career, flinging and dripping paint, he dances around the canvas. While it may look like merely throwing paint on a canvas, there is a method to his action painting madness. This art is an event, more than a picture. Much like shooting a movie with no script and no ending, his works fill space with no start or finish. Like Mount Asama, the active volcano next to his barn/woodpile studio, his action painting erupts with smoke and fire. His art is unpredictable and undisciplined, which is the way he likes It.

クリスチャンの持論は「偶然なカオス」であり、彼のキャリアを反映するかの様に、四方八方に絵具を飛び散らし垂らす手法でキャンバスの上で踊りながら描いている。単にキャンバスに絵具を散らしているように見えるが、彼の狂気に満ちたアクションペインティングには方法が存在している。彼のアートは単なる絵ではなく台本もエンディングも決まっていない映画を撮るような一つのイベントである。彼の作品は決まった開始も終了もなく空間を色で染めていく物で、小さな薪小屋をアトリエにして、近くにある活火山、浅間山のように彼のアクションペインティングは噴出する炎のよう。彼の芸術性は予測不可能で規律がなく自由である。

Because there is no main focal point in his works, each painting can be viewed for many years to come. His art colorfully compliments any home. Owning a Christian Storms painting is a celebration of the pioneer, Renaissance man spirit.

彼の作品には良い意味で元となる焦点がないため各絵画は今後何年も鑑賞可能。どんな家にも色添えできる作品ばかりで、クリスチャン・ストームズの絵画を所有することは先駆者であるルネサンスの人間精神を称えることである。
